Fujitsu U810 UMPC

I’m been evaluating the Fujitsu’s new U810 UMPC for the last week and wanted to share my point of view. The U810 is one of the smallest UMPC’s on the market with just over a 5” inch screen. It’s size and weight (1.5 lbs.) makes it easy to carry around. I was curious what adjustments I would have to make to accommodate using such a small PC. The following are my thoughts:

Pros:

1. Screen visibility is very good – I had no problem viewing any of my applications at the default resolution of 1024x600.
2. Pen and touch navigation are good – I was able to select menus, drop downs, scroll bars, etc. with relative ease.
3. Light weight and portable – I was able to place this unit in the palm of my hand and carry it around like holding a small notebook.
4. Functional keyboard – The keyboard is actually quite useful but takes some getting used to as many of the keys serve a dual function due to its small size.
5. Low Price – At $999.00, the price is very attractive.

Cons:

1. Sluggish performance – 800 MHz CPU, 1 gigabyte of RAM and Windows Vista makes for a slow performing computer. Fujitsu does include the Windows XP Tablet PC recovery CD however, if you wish to downgrade.
2. Pen Input - Pen is really small and hard to write with. Requires a strong tap on the screen to initiate pen input. Handwriting strokes are not as legible as on a digitizer screen.
3. Vectoring - When palm makes contact with the display, ink bleeds across the screen.

I also have a problem with vectoring; I looked fro settings that might help with that but was not able to find anyway; it makes it difficult to use the device as a tablet. I have two other tablets (a 12" and a 14") and both have active digitizers if this one had that it would be a phenomenal device.
